*** William Martin, The Parent’s Tao Te Ching, Marlowe and Company, 1999 – An absolute must for parenting, poetry and spirituality. This is probably the most inspirational poetry book on spiritual parenting ever written.

Naomi Shihab Nye, This Same Sky, A collection of Poems from Around the World, Aladdin Paperbacks, 1996 – Another compilation of poetry that is exceptional because it is international in scope.

Jean McMann, Altars and Icons, Sacred Spaces in Everyday Life, Chronicle Books, 1998 – A beautifully photographed book of personal altars with lots of good ideas.

Peg Streep, Altars Made Easy ,Harper San Francisco, 1997 – The most complete and clear book on making altars I have ever read.

Wright, Wendy. Sacred Dwelling. New York: Crossroad, 1989. – A comprehensive book on sacred places in our lives.


FAITH/SPIRTUALITY

Sherry Ruth Anderson & Patricia Hopkins, The Feminine Face of God, Bantum, 1991 – A masterpiece of journalism and spirituality that chronicles the authors’ search for women who have been empowered by their Divinity.

*** Charlotte Jojo Beck, Nothing Special Living Zen, Harper Collins, 1995 – A wonderful book about Zen written by master teacher.

Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spiritual Literacy – Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life - The complete guide to spirituality in everyday life organized in accessibly, fun ways.

Sri Chinmoy, A Child’s Heart & A Child’s Dreams, Aum Publications, 1986 – A beautiful little book about children’s spirituality, filled with wisdom

Patricia H. Davis, Beyond Nice, The Spiritual Wisdom of Adolescent Girls Fortress Press, 2001 – Breaks new ground on this topic. A great read.

Brooke Medicine Eagle, Buffalo Woman Comes Singing, Ballantine, 1991.- Offers an incredible insight into the spiritual life of Native Americans with poetic prose.

Thich Nhat Hanh, The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching, Broadway Books, 1999 – Any book by this amazing, poet and author is worth reading.

Sandra Ingerman, Soul Retrieval, Mending The Fragmented Self, Harper Collins, 1991 – Fascinating approach to finding the inner self. I’ve personally had a soul retrieval by one of Sandra’s colleagues and it healing and profound.

Enid Hoffman, Huna, A Beginner’s Guide, Whitford Press, 1976 – A little known author who writes incredible books about the Huna and the three selves.

Robert M. May, Physicians Of The Soul, The Psychologies Of the World’s Greatest Spiritual Teachers, Crossroad Press, 1982 – The best overview of the world’s Spiritual teachers from Jesus to Krishna I have ever read.

Kathleen Norris, Amazing Grace, Riverhead Books, 1998 – Anything by this author is enriching and rewarding.

*** Ronald Rolheiser, The Holy Longing, The Search For A Christian Spirituality, Doubleday, 1999 – An inspirational book about how one discovers spirituality and integrates it into everyday life.

*** Robert Lawrence Smith, The Quaker Book Of Wisdom, Eagle Brook (William Morrow) 1998 – A beautifully written book overviewing the Quaker faith.

Trungpa, Chogym. Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Shambhala, 1988. – If you’re intersted in Buddhism, this author is compassionate, caring and accessible.

Gary Zukav, The Seat Of The Soul, Fire Side Books (Simon and Schuster), 1990. –A classic

*** Myla and Jon Kabat-Zin, Everyday Blessings. The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting, New York, Hyperion, 1997. – A classic on spiritual parenting that is personal and practical as well.

*** Ann Tremaine Linthorst, Mothering As A Spiritual Journey, Crossroads Publishing, 1993 – The most beautifully written and inspiration book on spiritual mothering I have read.

Madeleine L’Engle, Trailing Clouds of Glory, Spiritual Values in Children’s Books, Westminster Press, 1985 – A little known book that is out of print but if you can get it, it is a treasure trove of good advice and sound suggestions on books for your daughters.

Bonnie W. McDaniel, In the Eye Of the Storm, A Celebration of Family and the Real Purpose of Home, AGL Press, 1999 – A wonderful book of ideas on how to connect with your children through activities centered in the home.

*** Hugh & Gayle Prather, Spiritual Parenting, Three Rivers Press,1996 – Another classic on spiritual parenting that is funny and accessble.

How you can recognize the warning signs of falling self-esteem and what you can do about it.

Julie Firman, Dorothy Firman, Daughters & Mothers, Healing the Relationship, Common Wealth Printing, 1989 – A classic, particularly if you are trying to connect with your own mother as well as your daughter.

Carol Gilligan, Nona Lyons, Trudy J. Hammer, Making Connections, The Relational Worlds of Adolescent Girls At Emma Willard School, Harvard Press, 1989 – Another classic in the study of the inner selves of teenage girls.

Andrea Johnson, Girls Speak Out – A guide to self-esteem which tells you how to create your own “speak out” sessions.

Frederick Leboyer, Birth Without Violence, Healing Arts Press, 1995 (Originally published in French in 1974) – The best book I have ever read about birth and breath.

Judy Mann, The Difference – Explores how parents, schools and community teach girls to value themselves less.

*** Bonnie Ohye, Love In Two Languages, Viking Press, 2001 – A ground-breaking book about teenage body language.

Peggy Orenstein, School Girls, Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap, Anchor Books, DoubleDay, 1994 – Another classic work on teenage girls.

*** Deborah Roffman, Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parent’s Guild To Talking Sense About Sex, Perseus Books, 2000 – This is the best book about how to talk about sex to your daughter I’ve read.

Mary Pipher, PH.D., Reviving Ophelia, Saving The Selves of Adolescent Girls, Ballantine Books, 1994 – A classic that teenage girls that you have probably read.

*** Ron Taffel/Melinda Blau, The Second Family: How Adolescent Power Is Challenging The American Family, St. Martins, 2001 – A book about teenagers and their peers versus family.

Roland Barach, Mindtraps, Unlocking the Key to Investment Success, Van K. Tharp, Associates, 1996. – I know this is may seem odd, putting a book about investing into a spiritual parenting resource section, but there are 80 plus “mindtraps” that Barach addresses all of which could be applied to parenting as well as trading the markets…empowering because you understand that human nature is the same no matter what area in life you are attempting to succeed.

Frank Channing Haddock M.S. PH.D., Power Of Will, Robert Collier Publications, 1925 – Haddock writes some of the original thoughts about self empowerment.

*** Byron Katie, Loving What Is, Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, Harmony Books, 2002. – A life-changing book that forces you to rethink how you perceive reality and truth. Excellent parenting tool.

Debbie Ford, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance, and Dreams, Riverhead Books, 1998, - A hard and truthful look at what makes us behave in self-destructive ways.

Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements, A Toltec Wisdom Book, Amber-Allen Publishing, 1997 – A classic.

J.S. Salt, Editor, Always Accept Me For Who I Am, Three Rivers Press, 1999 (for Boys and Girls, 12 – 16) – A collection of letters from Teenagers on acceptance to their parents.

Florence Scovel Shinn, Anthology of Works including The Game of Life & How To Play It, and Your Word Is Your Wand, De Vross& Company, 1988 – A classic collection of Shinn’s best works.

*** Brenda Ueland, If You want To Write, A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit, Greywolf Press, 1987, - Ueland wrote this book in 1938 and it is my favorite book about how to live a creative and integrated life. Don’t be put off by the reference to writing in the title.

Connie Zweig, Romancing the Shadow., A Guide To Soul Work For A Vital, Authentic Life, Ballantine Wellspring, 1997 – The best book I’ve read on our dark sides.

Julia Butterfly Hill, The Legacy of Luna, The Story of a Tree, a Woman and The Struggle To Save the Redwoods, Harper San Francisco, 2000 (For Girls and Boys, ages 10 – 18) – An inspirational and exciting story of Butterfly Hill’s two year stay at the top of a Redwood tree to stand off loggers.

Gordon Miller, Wisdom Of The Earth, Visions of an Ecological Faith, Green Rock Press, 1997 – Beautiful combination of photography and faith-based text.

Peg Streep, Spiritual Gardening, Time Life Books, 1999 – A beautiful and comprehensive book on gardening with spirit. Lots of good ideas for spiritual space.

Terry Tempest Williams, Refuge, Vintage Books, 1991. – Anything by this author is wonderful. This is about Williams’ relationship with her mother who is dying from cancer and her struggle to save a desert bird sanctuary in Utah.


HEALING THROUGH SPIRIT

Marc Ian Barasch, Healing Dreams, Riverhead Books, 2000 – A comprehensive book on how to interpret our dreams and how to use them to heal.

Dr. Henry Cloud, Changes That Heal, Zondervan PublishingHouse (Harper Collins), 1992 – A faith-based book dealing with two concepts of grace and truth and how to use them to heal ourselves.

*** Larry Dossey, MD, Prayer Is Good Medicine, Harper San Francisco, 1996 – Anything by Dossey is wonderful

Daniel Goleman, Editor, Healing Emotions, Conversations with the Dalai Lama On Mindfulness, Emotions, and Health, Shambala, 1997 – A dialogue that is filled with wonderful insights from the Dalai Lama.
